About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join Yarra’s Aboriginal Partnerships Unit and contribute to Council’s commitments to self-determination, cultural strength and improved outcomes for the First Peoples of Yarra.
Working under the guidance of the Principal Advisor, Aboriginal Partnerships, the Policy Advisor supports the development, implementation and review of policies, strategies and initiatives that strengthen Aboriginal participation, visibility and partnership across Council. The role contributes to key frameworks including the Council Plan, Health and Wellbeing Plan and the Yana Ngargna Policy Framework.
The role includes research and analysis, assisting with policy advice and reports, coordinating internal consultation, supporting governance forums, and contributing to First Peoples–led initiatives and partnership activities. It is well suited to someone seeking to deepen their policy skills within a collaborative and supportive team.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking a candidate with policy or research experience and an interest in contributing to work that supports improved outcomes for the First Peoples of Yarra. Experience working in local government or a comparable public policy setting is desirable, but not essential.
Skills and experience we value include:
- Experience contributing to policy development, strategy implementation and action planning
- Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to interpret evidence and summarise findings clearly
- An understanding of (or willingness to develop an understanding of) issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and relevant policy settings
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including coordination of consultation and governance activities
- Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality work under general direction
